About ProRES

Future energy systems with up to 100% renewable energy will need new ways to stay stable. Storage, flexible loads, and smarter control will be essential. As a result, “resilience” is becoming more important than traditional robustness. Resilience means detecting and predicting disruptions, reacting quickly to maintain a safe (even if sub‑optimal) operating state, and recovering fast.

High shares of variable renewables make energy systems more vulnerable to issues like extreme weather, congestion, voltage problems, or cyberattacks. Even flexible systems offer only seconds—not minutes—for operators to respond, as shown by events like the Continental Europe grid split. To support fast decision‑making, new automated tools are required.

ProRES introduces a proactive resilience approach to help operators manage systems with large-scale renewable integration. Reactive actions alone are no longer enough. ProRES will combine improved event prediction with decision‑support tools for complex situations and create learning frameworks where operators and AI systems improve together based on past events.

Objectives

The work in ProRES is focused around three main objectives.

Prediction

For system operators to be able to proactively respond to critical situations they need improved tools that can increase their situational awareness. Here, ProRES will develop improved methods for:

Resource aware real-time state estimation algorithms
Event detection, prediction, and grid configuration
Fault localization

Mitigation

In extreme situations operators must quickly decide on the best way to use their resources, such as available flexibility, to ensure system stability. ProRES will develop a decision support system that will provide system operators with suggestions based on real-time measurements and learning agents. The following detailed objectives will be followed:

Develop AI-based graceful degradation through countermeasures from learning agents
Parallel executions of what/if scenarios

Learning and Training

With a large-scale integration of variable RES, system operators are challenged with more uncertain and rapidly changing operating situations. To tackle this, ProRES will develop a cyber-physical digital twin that can be used for training of extreme situations as well as compliance testing of digital applications. The following detailed objectives are targeted:

Develop methods for creating cyber-physical digital twins
Create methods for compliance testing of digital applications
Develop a cyber-physical range for training and learning
